Finding the perfect gift for a baby’s first birthday can be tricky because we don’t really know what babies like yet. This is when it’s great to give open-ended toys—these allow them to play in many different ways as they grow. Below is a list of all the toys I got for my two kids on their first birthdays, along with my recommendations of what worked best. This will give you an idea of what are some good gifts for a baby’s first birthday and what you might want to avoid. You can find this entire list on my Amazon Storefront.

1. Leapfrog Phonics Fun Animal Bus

Rating: 7/10

(Amazon)

Initially, my son loved this toy for the music, especially since his favorite song was “Wheels on the Bus” at the time. However, it wasn’t very open-ended, so he eventually lost interest in it.

2. Fisher Price Classic Infant Trio

Rating: 10/10

(Amazon)

This set is still being used by both my kids! It’s an open-ended toy, and my son enjoyed the shape sorter as intended, but we’ve since repurposed the shapes for painting and tracing on paper. The xylophone became part of our music set, adding more value to this versatile gift.

3. VTech Turn & Learn Driver

Rating: 100/10

(Amazon)

Perfect for any little car enthusiast! My baby loved this as his first toy steering wheel. He still occasionally pretends to drive with it by placing it on the table or couch. A highly portable and entertaining toy.

4. Melissa & Doug Old MacDonald's Farm Sound Puzzle

Rating: 2/10

(Amazon)

This might be better for older toddlers. My son didn’t like the sounds and wasn’t sure how to engage with the puzzle, although he did enjoy holding the farm animal pieces while learning their names.

5. Kids Tool Set

Rating: 10/10

(Amazon)

After removing any small parts, this tool set became my son’s favorite for imaginative play. He’d tell us he was going to “kam” (work) with his tools. As an open-ended toy, it lasted a long time before we rotated it out for new toys.

6. Kids Pretend Kitchen Set

Rating: 1000/10

(Amazon)

This was a major hit! I passed down my childhood pots and pans, and my son loved them. Around his first birthday, he went through a phase where he loved pretending to cook, and this set kept him engaged for hours.

7. Laugh & Learn 3-1 Smart Car

Rating: 100000/100

(Amazon)

This was my son’s first car and his favorite. It’s been passed down to my daughter, and they both love it. This toy provides hours of fun, making it a must-have for any baby.

8. Wooden Train Set

Rating: 0/10

(Amazon)

Unfortunately, this didn’t capture my kids’ interest. They didn’t engage with the train set, and after a year of keeping it around, I ended up putting it into storage. It might be better for older toddlers or kids who are into trains.

9. Leapfrog 100 Words Book

Rating: 8/10

(Amazon)

This interactive book was a great tool for my son as he started learning simple words. He enjoyed the pictures and sounds, though it wasn’t as engaging as some other toys. We still bring it out occasionally.

10. Wooden Play Food

Rating: 10/10

(Amazon)

A fantastic open-ended toy! My son played with it in multiple ways, from pretend cooking to creating different play scenarios. It’s been one of the longest-lasting toys in our home.

11. Busy Board Book

Rating: 10/10

(Amazon)

We’ve taken this toy everywhere, and it’s kept both my kids busy. It’s a great travel companion, and its engaging, interactive design made it a staple in our toy collection.

12. Talking Parrot

Rating: 1/10

(Amazon)

I had high hopes for this toy because I loved it as a child. Unfortunately, neither of my kids took to it. It was only briefly funny when my son’s grandpa talked to it, but otherwise, it didn’t get much playtime.

13. Wooden Animal Magnet

Rating: 10/10

(Amazon)

This set is still in rotation! My kids play with these magnets on various surfaces around the house. They are open-ended and allow for imaginative play, making them a fantastic gift for a first birthday.

14. VTech Baby Walker

Rating: 8/10

(Amazon)

This walker is engaging and offers support as babies learn to walk. I wish I’d gotten it for my firstborn, as it might have helped with walking earlier. Still, a great addition to any baby’s toy collection.

Choosing a first birthday gift can be difficult, but open-ended toys that allow children to explore in various ways are a great option. Based on my experience, these recommendations have been hits with my kids and could be a great starting point for finding the perfect gift for the little one in your life.

It’s been way too long since I’ve been active on here and I truly truly missed this space on the internet but I’m BACK! Hopefully to stay this time around.

I’m not sure what I’d like to write about but I’d definitely like to continue blogging about things that interest me — which definitely evolved over the past 8 years since I first started this blog.

I would enjoy writing about life as is now. Although when I started this blog it’s central focus was on beauty, hence “beauty by lupa” is still the URL. Now I’m a full time mom and I run a small business ( more on that on a later post), which leaves very little time for anything else. However, I miss writing. I miss expressing myself and talking about things I love.

What will this blog be about now? Lifestyle. Just everything from food, travels, mom life, small business, faith and more. Basically my life in a nutshell.

I hope whoever lands on my blog finds something interesting and useful or just enjoys reading.

With love,
LUPA

Today’s vlog is from my umrah trip in January 2019.  For many years I’ve wanted to go do umrah but for many reasons it never happened. But Allah surely accepts all your khair duas and I got to experience this beautiful journey (please watch the vlog below and this post will make more sense).

This was probably the highlight of my life and my biggest achievement. I am so grateful to have visited the holy city. I honestly left a piece of my heart in Madina.

I didn’t vlog as much as I originally thought I would and Im happy that I didn’t because that would have distracted me from why I was there. I am still very happy about whatever footage I have. I kept most of the footage as raw just because I would like to remember as it was without many cuts. Which is also why I’m going to have 2 vlogs, one of Madinah and one of Makkah. So look out for the next one very soon.

As you can see we started our Umrah journey in Madinah.  We were there for a few days and then we headed to Makkah for our Umrah.

I cannot express in words what this entire experience was like. I pray everyone gets to experience this journey. I hope you enjoy these vlogs. I know so many people have planned on going but had to cancel because of the current situation in the world. I pray everyone who made the intention to go, gets the chance to go InnshaAllah.

On day 2 of Madinah after fajr salah we head to see Mount Uhud. It is located in Northern Madina. This is where the battle of Uhud took place. The prophet (PBUH) loved this mountain and would declare his love by saying: "Uhud is a mountain which loves us and which we love.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]”

I’m not a morning person and never experienced a sun rise so this was my first time watching the sunrise and it was one of the most beautiful sight.

We then headed to Masjid al-Quba. It is located just out side of Madina. It is the first ever Masjid that was built and is the oldest Masjid in Saudi Arabia. The first stones of the masjid was placed my Prophet Mohammed and was completed by his companions.

Sahl ibn Hunayf reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays in it, he will have a reward like the Umrah pilgrimage.”

Source: Sunan Ibn Mājah 1412

After we prayed two rakah nafl, we headed back to our hotel to get ready for duhr salah.

I felt so safe in Madina. I was by myself for the most part. I loved walking around the haram and finding different places to pray every time. I didn’t feel comfortable having my phone out and recording people or things like a tourist because I didn’t want to offend anyone.  But now looking back at these videos I’m so happy because I’m reminded of all these memories.

On day four in Madina, I met up with one of my friend who was living there at the time. It was so nice to see her there. I think seeing similar faces in foreign countries is always exciting. My friend showed me around, gave me a tour, took me to shops. We also went to the Quran Museum. They had so many beautiful Qurans displayed in so many different scripts and fonts. It was overall just a beautiful experience.

Day five was our last day and we headed for Umrah right after duhr salah. I took one last walk around the haram before coming back to the hotel and getting ready for Makkah.

We then headed to Makkah in the state of Ihram. Madina is by far my favourite city in the world and I can’t wait to go back one day InnshaAllah.

Stay tuned for the Makkah vlog coming soon!

This trip is obviously not recent but I'm vicariously living through these videos that I made in 2019 when my friends and I went on a day trip to Tobermory. It honestly felt like we were in a tropical country. The road trip itself didn't even feel long even though it's roughly 4 hours away from Toronto.

We packed food for the entire day and hit the road at 6am. Took a short break at Tim Hortons so my friend could use the wifi to finish her homework. We knew it was going to be hard finding halal food on the road and in Tobermory so we went prepared. If you go make sure to pack food for the day. When we arrived to Tobermory it felt very different from our city. It was much quieter even though it was peak summer season and you'd expect a lot of tourists. We bought tickets for our cruise and started our day.

Check out my video to see our entire day and everything we did.
It makes me so sad to think that we may not be able to travel like this again. Alhumdulillah for all these experiences. We take so many things for granted in life and not until it's taken away from us we truly realize the value of it. InnshaAllah we can travel soon.

It is certainly not easy to sum up this year. This year has brought so many challenges and Alhumdulillah we over came them all. I feel a little guilty to say that 2020 was actually my year. 2019 literally sucked the life out of me and for me 2020 has brought all of that and more back. I feel as if I lived an entire decade in one year.

I am so thankful Alhumdulillah. This video might not completely make sense as it’s just a compilation of videos I took over the year with no intention of posting it. But it highlights some of my best moments of the year so I thought I  would put it together.

Started the year with the man of my dreams, survived through first wave of COVID, spent a lot of time doing small things like going on drives, getting bubble teas and finding random parks and trails to go for walks. Spent the summer with family and friends. Also had three picnics and can’t forget the cottage trip. Thats always a highlight of the summer. Started a new job. Planned a wedding during a pandemic and survived through that as well. Married my best friend and ended the year by looking out the window with my husband and listening to people screaming Happy New Year! Alhumdulillah I wouldn’t have it any other way.

This year has been nothing but a blessing. All in one year, everything changed. The power of sincere dua and having tawakkul can get you out of anything. No matter how dark it gets, no matter how far you feel from happiness just remember that in a second everything can change. You are never alone and Allah is always listening. If in January 2019 someone told me in January 2021 I would be where I am today I would have thought they were insane.

I hope 2021 brings love happiness and blessings in everyones life. We all deserve a break this year.

I hope you enjoy this recap of my year. I am also thinking of making wedding highlights of all my events. I am so excited to be blogging/vlogging again. This is probably one thing I have the patience to spend hours and days doing.

InnshaAllah, more to come.

xx

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The first thing we need to is educate ourselves and our families and friends. We have to do our own research and stay up to date with what is happening. We need to have a serious conversation with our family members and keep them updated especially those of us who come from a South Asian background where racism is embedded in our culture. It is simply not enough to just post on social media because it's a trending topic.
